How To Get The Best Out Of Your Candle

Three ways you're buring you candles, the wrong way!

At SaltLight Candles, we believe candles are more than décor—they set the atmosphere of your home. A peaceful space. A moment of rest. A reminder of light in the everyday.

But even the cleanest candle can burn poorly if it isn’t cared for properly. If you’ve ever noticed black soot on your jar or your candle not lasting as long as it should, one of these common mistakes may be the reason.

Here are three ways you may be burning candles all wrong—and simple ways to fix them so you can enjoy a cleaner, longer, more intentional burn.

1. Poor-Quality Candles & Wax

The Mistake:

Many candles on the market are made with cheap paraffin wax, artificial fragrances, and dyes. When burned, these can release pollutants like soot and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), leaving behind a heavy, chemical smell.

Why It Matters:

Instead of a clean, comforting scent, you’re breathing in a mix of chemicals that can irritate the air in your home and overpower the space you’re trying to make peaceful.

The Fix:

Choose candles made with natural waxes like soy or beeswax and phthalate-free, allergen-free fragrances or essential oils.

✨ At SaltLight Candles, we intentionally use clean-burning wax and thoughtfully sourced fragrance oils—because what fills your home should honor both your space and your well-being.

2. Not Trimming the Wick

The Mistake:

Burning a candle with a wick longer than ¼ inch—or skipping trimming altogether—creates a large flame and causes “mushrooming” at the tip of the wick.

Why It Matters:

A long wick produces excess soot and smoke, blackening the jar and releasing particles into the air. It can also cause the candle to burn unevenly or too quickly.

The Fix:

Before every burn, trim your wick to ¼ inch. This ensures:

  • A cleaner flame

  • Less smoke and soot

  • A longer-lasting candle

🕯️ Think of wick trimming as candle stewardship—a small habit that makes a big difference.

3. Blowing Out the Flame

The Mistake:

Blowing out a candle may seem harmless, but it can spray hot wax, create smoke, and leave a lingering burnt smell in the room.

Why It Matters:

That smoke carries soot and burnt fragrance into the air, undoing the clean scent you just enjoyed and leaving residue on the candle jar.

The Fix:

Use a wick dipper or candle snuffer. Gently dip the wick into the melted wax pool, then straighten it back up. This method:

  • Extinguishes the flame without smoke

  • Prevents wax splatter

  • Keeps your candle looking clean and beautiful

✨ A quieter ending to the burn—just like the stillness candles are meant to create.

Light with Intention

Candle care isn’t about perfection—it’s about intentional living. When you care for your candle well, it rewards you with a cleaner burn, a longer life, and a more peaceful atmosphere.

At SaltLight Candles, our prayer is that every flame you light reminds you of truth, rest, and the Light that never fades.
